Kakamega’s St Joseph Indangalasia Secondary launches fund for needy students

St Joseph Indangalasia Secondary School in Matungu Sub-county of Kakamega County has launched an Endowment Fund to cushion it from any financial uncertainties.

The fund will cater for the massive fees arrears, which have accumulated over time due to the inability of orphans and those from needy backgrounds to meet their financial obligations.

Speaking to Education News in his office, the principal David Ouma noted that the fund is instrumental in fixing the financial problems that have dogged the institution, enabling the learners to achieve their education goals.

The head said that the school has identified 117 severe cases that need urgent attention as the kitty continues to grow, calling on all education stakeholders to patronize it so that the less fortunate can have the privilege of accessing education like anyone else.

He revealed that the school, with a population of more than 600 students, has a large number of needy cases, hence the effort to come up with mitigation measures to address the challenges.

The kitty was launched by Kakamega Woman Representative Herzi Muhanda during the school’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), helping to raise the initial Ksh180,000 as seed capital.

In addition, the county MP urged parents to provide their girls with essentials such as sanitary towels to enable them attend lessons without interruption, having made her own donation of the hygiene products.

Last year, out of a total candidature of 135, the school managed to send 14 to university after getting a mean point of 4.2 despite the gruesome financial difficulties. This year, they have set their target at 6.5 while focussing to push quality grades to 50 from an entry of 178 candidates.

The four-stream school is facing a series of other challenges, the major one being the perennial water shortage as they only have a seasonal borehole. The principal is appealing to more well-wishers to come on board and resolve this matter, plus others like the construction of a Science laboratory.

St Joseph Indangalasia High is a mixed day and boarding school sponsored by the Catholic church, better known for its sporting prowess.

There are two deputies Gerald Okata for administration and Dennis Asikoyo for academics. The Board of Management (BoM) chairman is Antony Barasa and his Parents Association counterpart (PA) is Maurice Okumu.
