Kakamega County Assembly has conducted a public participation for the establishment of the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI).
The institution will offer several programmes to assist youth, as well as students pursuing agriculture.
Speaking during the public forum, Lusheya-Lubinu Ward MCA Timothy Anzetse, also the chairperson for Lands, Physical Planning, and Urban Development, noted that they have finalised the plans for the construction of the training centre.
Kisa North MCA James Etabale, who is also the chairperson for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Development, noted that KEMFRI will offer more training to students and farmers on aquaculture.

Public participation was held following an agreement between the County Government of Kakamega and the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute.
During the exercise, they all agreed to welcome the project, which will assist residents and other counties bordering Kakamega.

He underscored the significance of establishing the KEMFRI training centre, enabling them to acquire knowledge and skills in enhancing the blue economy, which needs to be prioritised.
He expressed gratitude over the agreement that was signed between KEMFRI and the County government of Kakamega to come up with the Research institute “I think it will be the third County to set up the facility,” affirmed MCA Etabale
Lumakanda Ward MCA Bernard Mulamia echoed the sentiments, adding that it will receive a significant boost in aquaculture, and through research, it will be provided with strong breeds for fish production.
