Kakamega KNUT decries excess levies imposed on school heads

KNUT Kakamega County Chairperson Patrick Chungani

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kakamega Chairman Patrick Chungani has decried unreasonable levies being imposed on school heads by education officers in the region.

According to Chungani, the school heads have raised complaints against being asked to pay Ksh2,000 for logistics during the approval of essential documents.

He further noted that the financial burden becomes apparent when considering that 150 heads in Lugari alone are expected to contribute Ksh300,000 and if extended countywide it would be a staggering Ksh3,900,000.

Speaking on behalf of the region’s education officers, Chungani firmly asked the heads not to pay as these levies are both excessive and irregular.

“We demand transparency from the Ministry of Education and we urge teacher unions to stand firm against these collections,” the KNUT boss said.
