Kakamega high school’s football team, Green Commandos SC, is set to receive about Ksh22 million in solidarity fees following the transfer of Kenyan international defender Joseph Okumu to French club Stade de Reims.

The payment follows a ruling by the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber in relation to Okumu’s move from Belgian side K.A.A. Gent to Stade de Reims in 2023.

The transfer was valued at £12 million, making it one of the biggest moves involving a Kenyan player in recent years.

Under FIFA regulations, five percent of an international transfer fee is set aside as a solidarity contribution.

This money is meant to reward clubs and institutions involved in a player’s training and development between the ages of 12 and 23.

As one of Okumu’s formative teams, Kakamega High School qualified for part of this contribution.

After a dispute over the payment, the matter was referred to FIFA, whose Dispute Resolution Chamber ruled in favour of Green Commandos SC.

As a result, the school is now entitled to an estimated Ksh22 million from the solidarity pool.

The payout is expected to significantly boost football development at Kakamega High School, which has a strong reputation for nurturing young talent.

It is also seen as a major win for school and grassroots football in Kenya, highlighting the importance of investing in youth development.

Joseph Okumu, who has since established himself in European football and with the national team, continues to be a source of pride for his former school.

His transfer is now not only a personal milestone but also a landmark case that underscores the value of proper player development pathways.
