Kakamega County scraps funds for needy students

Kakamega County Government will not be offering education bursaries for needy students this year a move that has caused uproar among the Members of the County Assembly.
Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said those in need of bursaries should approach the National Government because only early childhood education was devolved and that is what he wants to concentrate on.
The Governor speaking at the county headquarters insisted that the county will focus on ward-based projects.
In the previous years, the county has been spending Sh120 million on education bursaries.
“If anyone wants bursaries they should go and ask the members of Parliament since bursaries are in the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) kitty,” he stated.
Sh120 million allocated for bursary fund under education support programme in the budget was reallocated to the Earlier Childhood and Polytechnics Education programme after being approved by the majority in the house.
The County Executive will now spent Sh600 million on ward based projects out of which Sh8 million will be spent to hire 250 Board of Management polytechnic instructors across the County. Each Instructor will be earning Sh10,000 a month.
