Kakamega County government rips off ECDE Management from primary schools

By Denis Lumiti

The Kakamega County has separated management of Early Childhood Development Education centers from primary schools.

Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said the move was aimed at ending conflicts that have been experienced between ECDE teachers and heads of primary schools.

“We have now managed to separate the management of ECDE and primary schools. It has not been easy because we encountered resistance but I can now announce that we have managed to make ECDE independent,” said Oparanya.

He said primary school head teachers had been influencing how money disbursed to ECDEs should be utilized thereby sidelining the teachers who are County staff.

“Some head teachers have been diverting funds meant for ECDE programmes to other activities. This will be a thing of the past after separation of management of the two entities,” he said.

The governor made the remarks during a public participation exercise in Khwisero Sub-County.

He pointed out that ECDE was a formal education and that his administration was committed to uplifting standards of the sector.

He said 16 ECDE centers had been put up in Khwisero.

He said 122 ECDE teachers had been employed and 56 others supported through schools Board of Management in the sub-county.

“We are finalizing the Scheme of Service for ECDE teachers and from January we shall start implementing their increased salaries,” he said.
