Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has allocated Ksh59.1 million in capitation funds to cater for the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) sector in the area.

Speaking during the launch of the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) 2023-2027 on Thursday at Bukhungu International Stadium, Barasa said that the fund is meant to ensure a firm foundation for the juveniles by easing the school fee burden for parents.

He noted that the county had also set aside Ksh455 million to cater for the salaries of ECDE teachers who are now employed on permanent and pensionable terms and has also procured and dispatched learner-friendly equipment and learning materials to ECDE centers across the county.

“We will employ more teachers and improve their terms of service. We will also supply the necessary equipment to the centres to ensure that children learn from friendly environments,” he said

Barasa said that CIDP project is an ambitious plan to expand opportunities for children in the county to access quality ECDE education.

He noted that a solid ECDE foundation has a bearing on a child’s future academic progress hence the need to invest in the sector by providing the requisite equipment and personnel.

The Governor further said that his administration intends to build more county polytechnics as well as upgrade the current polytechnics to ensure that they have a conducive learning environment and offer relevant courses that will prepare professionals with skills to serve the current market needs.
