Kakamega cancels plan to allow public schools increase lunch programme

The Kakamega County Director of Education Hellen Nyangau has cancelled the initial plan which had given all public day secondary schools in the County green light to increase the lunch programme.

This is despite her giving the green light after their initial board meeting and approving the increment.

In a cancelled circular dated November 14, 2023 which had been addressed to all Principals of Public Day Schools through the Sub County directors of education in Kakamega County, the plan had given the schools a go-ahead to increase the lunch programme which was not to exceed Ksh. 15, 000 for the next academic year 2024.

“Following the request by Principals of Public Day Secondary Schools on increase of lunch programme due to the high costs of commodities, the County Education Board under Min 7/12/10/23 approved lunch programme not exceeding Ksh. 15, 000 per learner for Public Day Secondary Schools,” the directed circular read.

Recently, Secondary Schools Principals through their umbrella body the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) in the country had complained of increased costs of running schools and even wrote to the Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu requesting to increase the school fees paid by parents.
