Youth in Kajiado County have been urged to apply for China’s Huawei Multinational Corporation free training programme which will be held in Kajiado Central and Kajiado North sub-counties starting in the week of 10th October 2023.
Olkeri Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Stephen Ngatho said the State Department of ICT and State House had partnered with the Chinese Tech firm to offer training to youth around the country.
He was speaking during a public participation meeting on the Kajiado County Vocational Training Centres Bill, 2023.
About 180 youth from the two sub-counties will receive the two-week training, and three will be selected to be airlifted to China for jobs.
He revealed that State House Comptroller Katoo Ole Metito had a hand in bringing the project to the county.
“We thank Ole Metito for the project. We need more of such projects to empower our youths,” the MCA said, adding that, together with Principal Secretary in the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy John Tanui, the comptroller will issue recognition certificates from Huawei.
The MCA will also push for donation of electronics from Huawei and other government institutions to support the youth. Parents were also asked to complement his efforts by buying the beneficiaries computers to apply their skills.
The project is in line with President William Ruto’s idea of creation of digital jobs for Kenyans.
The Chinese firm opened a regional training centre in Nairobi in 2017 with the aim of growing technical skills in the field of information and communication technology.
