Pupils at Lenkishon Comprehensive School in Il Bissil, Kajiado County, have a reason to smile after a local community-based organisation, Face of Kenya International, came to their rescue by fencing the school to keep out wild animals and trespassers.
For years, learning at the school was constantly disrupted by wildlife wandering from nearby bushes and livestock grazing within the compound.
The teachers say it was common for lessons to be halted as pupils fled from stray animals.
That is now history after the org constructed a perimeter fence, installed a gate, and provided a water tank to enhance safety and sanitation at the school.
The group also spearheaded tree planting to restore vegetation destroyed by free-ranging livestock.

According to the organisation’s chairman, Paul Mukoma, the project was inspired by the need to ensure that children in rural schools have a secure, environmentally friendly space to learn.
“We wanted to give these learners peace of mind. The fence protects them from wild animals while the water tank supports learning and tree planting efforts,” said Mukoma.
His colleague, Stanley Ngugi, added that community involvement was key to the project’s success.
“This is a clear example of what local partnerships can achieve. It’s not just about putting up a fence — it’s about protecting the future of these children,” Ngugi stated.
The school’s head teacher, Joseph Tikani, said the project has already made a big difference.
“Previously, we had to deal with livestock invading the classrooms and damaging young trees. Today, our learners can focus better and teachers can teach without interruption,” he said.
Parents also praised the initiative, saying the transformation has given them confidence in their children’s safety.
“Our children can now learn without fear. The fence has brought peace to this school,” said Alice Tipape, one of the parents.
