The Senate Committee on National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration has urged Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku to consider increasing the number of youth and people living with disabilities in the county’s workforce.

Lenku had appeared before Senator Mohamed Chute-led committee to deliberate on Kenya’s diversity representation in the staff composition of Kajiado County, presenting a report indicating that the youth comprise 39.2 per cent of the county’s total workforce, whereas people living with disabilities make up 0.51 per cent contrary to Section 65 (1) (c) and Section 65 (1) (e) of the County Government Act, 2012.

Governor Lenku informed the Senate that his county has employed 1,756 youth and 23 people living with disabilities out of a total workforce of 4,483 staff.

Senators present raised concerns about Kajiado County’s failure to adhere to the provisions of the County Government Act and called on Governor Lenku to consider increasing the number of youth and people living with disabilities in the county’s workforce.

The legislators also urged the county boss to adhere to the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act, 2015, which requires that women, youth and persons with disabilities access 30 per cent of government procurement opportunities.

“According to the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority’s Report, Kajiado County awarded 26 contracts worth Ksh120,702,757. Does it meet the 30 per cent reservation requirement for youth and persons living with disabilities?” Sen Kamau Githuku (Lamu) enquired.

The governor defended his government, indicating that his administration has implemented several affirmative action measures which aim to promote the recruitment and leadership of women, youth and persons with disabilities.
