The government of Kajiado County has launched and disbursed bursaries worth KSh 6.5 million to 261 students with disabilities across the county.

This marks a milestone after the enactment of the Kajiado County Disability Mainstreaming Act, 2023, which established the disability mainstreaming fund and programme.

The budget seeks to improve the livelihoods of People with Disabilities (PWDs) by improving their mobility, education, health, and quality of life.

Kajiado Deputy Governor Martin Moshisho said the County Government of Kajiado is celebrating the Milestones achieved in changing the disability narratives and enhancing social inclusion and development.

The fund for university students was sh. 35,000, for middle-level colleges, sh. 30,000, and for high school students,  KSh25 000.

Of the 282 students who applied for the county bursaries, 261 benefited.

Chairperson of the Disability Mainstreaming Committee Betty Taany underscored that the County Government must now be intentional about establishing a modern database that will enhance effective services to all PWDs.

Taany pointed out that education is a fundamental right. Still, many children living with disabilities cannot access quality education, because of cultural barriers and stigma that weaken the spirit of the affected.

She urged all levels of government and non-state actors to embrace the spirit of ensuring that the PWDs enjoy and feel loved.
