Kabaa High School shut indefinitely after students plot to torch facilities

Kabaa High School closed indefinitely after unrest over prolonged term, arson threats.

Kabaa High School in Mwala Sub-county has been closed indefinitely following unrest among students who allegedly planned to torch school facilities.

According to Mwala Sub-county Police Commander Fredrick Sitel, the students had expressed grievances over what they termed a prolonged school term. This complaint has also been raised in other institutions.

The tension is said to have escalated on Thursday evening and continued into Friday morning, forcing the administration to take immediate action.

The school’s Board of Management (BoM) convened an emergency meeting. It was resolved to send the learners home to “cool off” before the situation spiralled out of control.

Officials expressed concern that keeping the students in school under such circumstances risked property destruction and possible harm to other learners.

This closure comes barely days after a similar incident at Makutano Boys High in the same sub-county, where students set a dormitory ablaze, citing the same frustrations.

The Ministry of Education is yet to issue an official statement on the issue.
