JSS teachers suspend autonomy push to honour late Raila Odinga

The Kenya Junior Secondary Teachers Association (KEJUSTA) has suspended all its campaign and advocacy activities to honour the late Raila Amolo Odinga.

The Kenya Junior Secondary Teachers Association (KEJUSTA) has announced the suspension of all its campaign activities in honour of the late Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a towering figure in the struggle for democracy, good governance, and human rights.

In a statement dated October 16, 2025, KEJUSTA Chairperson James Everns Odhiambo said the association has decided to temporarily halt all advocacy activities related to the push for the autonomy of Junior Secondary Schools until the late statesman is laid to rest.

Odhiambo said the decision was made as a mark of deep respect for the former Prime Minister and President, whose leadership left an indelible mark on Kenya’s democratic fabric.

“Raila Amolo Odinga has profoundly shaped the foundations of this nation and inspired democratic ideals across the world. His untimely demise has left a great void in our hearts and in the fabric of our nation,” the statement read in part.

KEJUSTA, which has been actively advocating for the independence of Junior Secondary Schools from primary administration, had been in the advanced stages of filing a High Court petition to safeguard teachers’ and learners’ interests.

However, Odhiambo noted that those plans would be paused in observance of the national mourning period.

“As we join the nation in mourning, we have chosen to suspend these efforts in honour of this great statesman and patriot,” he stated.

Odhiambo urged all Junior Secondary School teachers to remain united and steadfast in defending the dignity and rights of both learners and educators.

He emphasized that despite the temporary pause, KEJUSTA’s resolve to fight for the professional autonomy of Junior Secondary teachers remains firm.

“In the spirit of Jakom, we urge teachers to stay united and continue advocating for fairness and justice in the education sector. Our struggle continues, and our determination remains unshaken,” Odhiambo added.

The association expressed its condolences to the family of the late Raila Odinga and the entire nation, recognizing his lifelong dedication to equality and social justice.

KEJUSTA’s statement concluded with a message of resilience and continuity, borrowing the liberation slogan that the late leader often championed:

“The struggle continues. Aluta continua.”
