The Junior Secondary School intern teachers across the country can now breathe a sigh of relief after Suna West Member of Parliament MP and Budget Committee Member Peter Masara announced that all interns will be confirmed to permanent and pensionable terms before January 1, 2026.
Speaking during a live interview on a local television, Masara said parliament already provided for the necessary funds to ensure the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) proceeds with the confirmation process without further delays.
He revealed that the Budget and Appropriations Committee has held extensive consultations with the Ministry of Education and TSC to align staffing requirements with available resources.
The lawmaker acknowledged the frustrations and anxieties many interns have endured while serving under uncertain terms, often in remote schools with heavy workloads.
“These teachers have been instrumental in supporting the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), yet many have felt undervalued due to prolonged internship contracts.” He said
According to the legislator, confirming interns is a critical step toward stabilizing the education sector and strengthening the delivery of learning outcomes.
“Teachers deserve dignity and predictable terms of service. We cannot continue relying on temporary arrangements while expecting high-quality education,” he stated during the interview.
The debate surrounding the fate of intern teachers has been gaining traction nationwide, with unions and several MPs urging the government to prioritize their absorption.
Many stakeholders argue that retaining teachers on internship for extended periods is exploitative and demoralizing, especially given the expanded responsibilities under the Junior Secondary School (JSS) programme.
Masara urged intern teachers to remain calm as final procedures are being concluded; assuring them that Parliament is committed to fairness and equity.
He also emphasized that the confirmation exercise will help address the acute teacher shortage currently affecting JSS and some primary schools.
The announcement is expected to bring hope to thousands of interns who have been uncertain about their future in the profession. Once implemented, the move will not only boost teacher morale but also enhance stability in classrooms across the country.
