A family in Nyando is mourning the tragic death of Fletcher Otieno, who died in an accident while picking up his graduation gown.

A cloud of sorrow has descended on a family from Nyando in Kisumu County after what was meant to be a moment of celebration for their son has now turned into preparations for his burial.

Fletcher Otieno was expected to walk proudly in his academic gown next week, a milestone he had earned through years of hard work and determination.

But instead of celebrating his achievement, his loved ones are now mourning a bright life cut short, struggling to accept the painful twist of fate that robbed them of a young man full of hope.

Otieno’s close friend, Jeff Okopot, revealed that the comrade from Nyando was scheduled to graduate on December 5th from the Cooperative University in Karen, an accomplishment he had eagerly awaited.

However, tragedy struck on the very day he went to collect his graduation attire. Jeff explained that Otieno had been picked up near Kenyatta Hospital by a friend who offered to drive him to pick up his gown.

“At around 7 pm, while using a diversion road, a speeding pick-up rammed into them on the side where Otieno was seated,” Jeff recounted.

Otieno, who was also known as a vibrant local footballer around the Kenyatta area, died on the spot. The friend who was driving remains in the ICU at Kenyatta Hospital, fighting for his life.

Those who knew Otieno describe him as hardworking, warm, disciplined and deeply cherished. He pushed through challenges with determination and inspired many through his commitment.

The fact that he never lived to experience the joy he had rightfully earned makes the loss even more devastating.

His untouched graduation gown now stands as a painful symbol of a future abruptly cut short, while the empty seat he was meant to occupy on graduation day will serve as a silent reminder of a life ended too soon.

It is a heartbreaking illustration of how quickly life can change and how dreams can be shattered in an instant.
