Joy as Karuri High in Kiambu celebrates 60th anniversary

Karuri High in Kiambaa Sub-county Kiambu celebrated 60 years since its inception with alumni of the school reconnecting where they resolved to help build the school infrastructure, equip classes with LCD screens and also pay school fees for the needy students.

Martin Wamiti, a former student who joined the school in 1979 speaking during the occasion said that it was an exciting moment of reunion of all years where we have resolved to support the school to reach the next level.

“We want Karuri High to have a legacy that will last and we decided as alumni to join hands in helping the school to reach the next level in terms of good infrastructure and also helping the needy to stay in school through paying for their school fees,” Wamiti said.

He said that they are happy to celebrate 60 years where they have met as classmate and now they are aged.

“I have got to meet my classmates now we are grandfathers and grandmothers and it is an exciting moment for us all,” he said

He said to commemorate the day the school is in dire need of learning television since it is the new technology of learning.

“In our days technology was not there and now the syllabus have changed students now need computers and other devices to stay in line with the emerging trends and as alumni we decided to buy the learning devices to help the students in their learning,” he said.

Kabatha Njoroge, who joined the school in 1976 said that the school gave them what they required to succeed in life and reconnecting is a way of giving back and motivates the current learners of the school.

“We came to say thank you to the school which shaped us to who we are today and in turn we mentor the current students and motivate them,” he said.

He said that they will help in way to see that the school improves in their teaching methods.

Sospeter Njenga principal Karuri High said that the school through its alumni decided to celebrate 60 years since its inception in 1964 and former students and former teachers of the school came to grace the occasion and have reconnected.

“We had students of 1964 and the most current one of last year coming back to school and reconnect,” he said.

Njenga said that the alumni resolved to undertake to solve challenges being faced by the school which include infrastructure of having lesser classrooms not enough to cater for the 1,700 students who are congested in classes.

The school was started in 1964.

“We have a stalled classroom building and we would want the alumni to help us finish as we require more classes,’ he said.

He said that the school requires computers in the school ICT hubs.

“We require LCD screens in our classrooms as we have been able to install the screens in only 8 classes and we have 24 classes. The alumni have said they will donate to the school to enhance learning continuity,” he said.

He said that over 150 students are in dire need of school fees where the alumni have resolved to adopt them and start a kitty to help support the students.

“I am happy that the alumni have agreed to help pay school fees for the needy students of the school,” he said.

He said that the alumni have went ahead to support the needy students beyond high school to universities and colleges which has impacted positively in the society.

“The alumni have shown love towards the school they schooled in and they have since formed a group where they are able to act upon solving the challenges being faced by the school,” he said.
