JOOUST Students protesting over insecurity in Siaya town

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology’s (JOOUST) Siaya Town Campus students have taken to the streets to protest what they say is rising insecurity.

The Faculty of Agriculture students barricaded the Siaya-Nyadorera road to demand answers to the laxity of the security personnel that allowed strangers to get into hostels and sexually harass female students.

On Thursday night, it is alleged that an intruder sneaked into a hostel in the dead of the night and inappropriately touched a female student.

Speaking during the protest, the victim explained that the intruder entered her room at mid-night.

“I was asleep in the campus hostel and was woken up by a man touching my hands and legs. I screamed and he ran into hiding. The intruder came back a few minutes later claiming that he was a security guard and I phoned a male student for help,” she said.

Otieno Orero, responding to the distress call, arrived in the company of other male students and apprehended the intruder, who they handed over to the security guards.

What sparked the protest was the fact that the offender had been let off.

“We woke up to find out that the suspect was freed and we are wondering whether the watchmen were in the deal,” Otieno said.

One of the student leaders Emmanuel Ochieng’ said various members of faculty have lately been losing electronic gadgets due to lack of adequate security.
