JOOUST to enroll TVET students

JOOUST is set to provide Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes to learners as from this year.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) will be the first chartered university in Kenya to give students who are interested in learning artisan skills options after the institution decided to create a TVET department.

The programme aims to lower the county`s unemployment rate since the white –collar jobs in the region are limited.

The institution’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Steven Angong said the move was to increase the number of artisans in Kenya which are very few despite a rising demand for their service across the country.

“With more competent artisans in Siaya, there will be more options for young people to find work and less of a need to import artisan services from other nations,” said Angong.

JOOUST TVET Director Erick Okute stated that the organisation presently offers 26 programmes and is asking the TVET authority to increase the number to 30 as students feel like they are part of a university even if they are enrolled in artisan classes.

He also urged the government to support the TVET students in terms of eligibility for funding from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to help in covering the institution costs.
