JKUAT suspends academic activities due to strike

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology, JKUAT has temporarily suspended academic activities due to the nationwide lectures’ strike which has paralysed learning for the last six weeks.

In a notice released and signed by the Universty’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, academic affairs, Prof. Robert Kinyua, the institution said that the resolution has been arrived at to suspend academic activities until further notice.

“Due to the ongoing industrial action by members of staff under the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), which has adversely affected the normal operations of academic programmes, a Special Meeting of Senate held on Thursday, 30th October 2025 at 12:00 noon resolved that the University temporarily suspends academic activities with immediate effect until further notice.” The notice read.

All students have also been directed to clear from the University by 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, 2nd November 2025.

The University however stated that the directive does not affect the: Medical students who are on clinical rotations, JKUAT TVET Institute students, Mombasa Campus students, SODEL students, JKUAT/KESRA students, Nakuru Campus students , and Postgraduate students who are conducting research.

The students have been asked to remain calm until the further communication on resumption of academic activities be issued in due course through the University’s official channels.

The lectures strike which has lasted for 46 weeks is at cross-road, as the government and the Unions are at logger-heads on the means og settling the Ksh 7.9billion arrears.

On October 31, 2025, the government offered to settle the arrears in two phases, the offer which was overruled by the UASU Secretary General Dr. Constantine Wasonga who demanded that the arrears must be settled in full amount for the dons to call off the strike and resume classes.
