JKUAT appoints new Director of Academic Quality Assurance

Dr. Christian Adika Adenya has been appointed the Directorate of Academic Quality Assurance (DAQA) Director at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

He takes over from Prof. Erick Okong’o who has served as the Director for the last 6 years.

The appointment was made by the Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi vide a letter dated April 14, 2023. His appointment runs for a period of two years, effective April 1, 2023.

According to the appointment letter, “As the Director,” Dr. Adenya “will be both the administrative and academic head of the Directorate.”

The VC congratulated Dr. Adenya following his elevation to the new position, having served as the Deputy Director, DAQA since November 1, 2022.

While acknowledging the appointment, Dr. Adenya expressed his readiness to work with diligence and dedication to ensure the varsity not only maintains its brand character as a veritable institution of higher learning, but also delivers on its core mandate through quality training, teaching and research.

Dr. Adenya is a Lecturer and former Department of Marine Engineering and Maritime Operations (MEMO) Chairman in the School of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Materials Engineering (SoMMME) in the College of Engineering and Technology (CoETEC). He served as CoD from April 2018 to April 2022.

He holds a Ph.D. in Design and Construction of Naval Architecture and Ocean Structure, from Harbin Engineering University, P. R. China (2016), M.Sc. Mechanical  Engineering (Design and Production) JKUAT (2010), and a B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering (First Class Honours), the University of Nairobi (2000).

The outgoing Director, Prof. Okong’o wished Dr. Christiaan Adenya well as he takes on the mantle for Quality Assurance in the University.

He indicated that prior to Dr. Adenya’s appointment as the Director, he worked with him in the capacity of Deputy Director, DAQA.

“He is a team player and always ready to learn. May God grant him wisdom, knowledge and the resilience to steer the University to greater heights as pertains quality across all the University divisions,” he said.

Prof. Okong’o is of the view that some of the key issues as the new director takes charge include: To lead all academic departments in embracing competence based curricula,  as well as reviewing  and aligning  all curricula to CBC since CBC is a global idea and trend for academic relevance in the 21st century and beyond.

DAQA was established in June, 2008 to among others functions, implement the Academic Quality Assurance policy.

This has been achieved through development Academic Quality Assurance Handbook, development of guidelines on Curriculum Development and Review, conducting Evaluation of Curriculum Performance by students every semester, preparation of University Self-Assessment Report for the Commission for University Education, development of guidelines for Campus Self-Assessment, and conduction of training and sensitization to all staff on matters quality assurance.
