Its thrilling performances, accolades collection in Kenya National Music Festivals in Nyeri

The Kenya National Music Festivals have kicked off in Nyeri County with thrilling performances being experienced.

The festival is themed towards nurturing talent for innovation and National development.

Thrilling performances were witnessed on Thursday at the 95th Kenya National Music Festival, marking the seventh day since the festival opened its curtains.

The festival is being held at the Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology in Nyeri, with the theme of promoting Science and Technology dominating the day in a special category sponsored by the School Equipment Production Unit (SEPU).

There was a pin-drop silence at hall 6 where students from various secondary schools performed poems composed linking the core function, the role and the benefits of SEPU in furthering the National Education goals through the provision of science and technology equipment and laboratory chemicals in schools and technology.

It was a cheering moment as girls from Metkei Girls High School used an artistic skill to perform a poem entitled ‘the transformation’ by Casimir Obiero that depicted their dreams will take flight and education will thrive after SEPU transformed their whole learning experience by establishing standards for science laboratories and equipping materials reacquired for teaching science and technologies.

And as for that, they were awarded a trophy for winning under the poem category.

“We were looking for students who clearly described how SEPU has improved the education standards in various schools concerning the products of SEPU,” adjudicator Calvin Adwor said as he awarded Metkei girls.

Damacrest School carried the day after a breathtaking performance under the arrangement of African traditional songs, mixed voices for secondary school after they sang a song entitled ‘wan mana welo’ a  Luo sacred song that depicted a temporary resident in this world who soon shall leave this world and inherit the kingdom of the Lord.

With the festivals not only promoting talent but also preserving the cultural heritage, Metkei Girls High School were awarded a trophy in class 1819J after an electrifying performance of Marakwet folk dance, a dance performed by young girls and women in Elgeyo Marakwet during happy occasions.

“Through such music festivals we can preserve our cultural and traditional practices positively,” Peter Kiplagat, their trainer said.

The festival which is themed towards nurturing talent for innovation and national development will run till the 23rd of August has seen praises from people with disability (PWD) who in the past festivals have remained unrecognized.

According to Mlimani primary special unit for the visually impaired, teacher Kendogor Moses, this year’s music festival has been well organized as people with disabilities have been given a chance to showcase their talents.

“The Ministry of education has recognized PWDs unlike in other festivals, it has brought us a chance to interact with others, I’m an official in the festival and I think there is a need for sensitization on the importance of inclusion of PWDs in every opportunity,” he said.
