The just concluded Kenya National Music Festival held at Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology in Nyeri County has brought economic upswing to local traders in the county.
Traders not only from Nyeri have reported a significant profit margin since the event started one week ago.
The festival has brought together over 130, 000 pupils and students from pre-primary, secondary and post–secondary institutions.
According to a survey, hotels were fully booked, forcing some of the participants and spectators to seek accommodation in other neighboring towns.
James Mwangi, a lodging owner, said his rooms were fully booked since the festival began, a thing that has never happened.
“The festivals created a very good business opportunity for hotels and restaurants, there were overwhelmed by customers, I started receiving visitors some days before the festival started,” he said.
He added that traders were very excited about the festival and took full advantage to make more profit.
“The event created an ideal opportunity for traders to generate substantial profit and we are wishing that this national event should always be held in this county,” he said.
Grace Wangechi, a food vendor who had mounted a tent in the University, said it has been an opportunity for his business.
“The festival brought people from all parts of the country and they had a chance to taste local food from Nyeri,” she said.
The event not only brought a positive impact to the Nyeri residents but also to traders from other parts of the country.
Peter Gathii, a professional photographer from Nakuru said he had set up his photography studio before the festival and the demand for his services were unmatched.
“This is not my first time to be in the music festival, during such events the demand for our services is very high, we made a good profit that will have a positive effect on our lives,” he said.
The festivals themed, ‘nurturing talent for innovation and national development,’ have seen Nyeri County and neighboring counties gain economically.
