Issue guidelines on promotion of 5,000 sports teachers, TSC told

Mama Etyang, Kenya Primary Schools Association National Secretary

The Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association (KPSSA) has asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to come up with a framework that will see over 5,000 sports teachers promoted as per President Ruto’s directive.

The association also lauded President William Ruto’s proposal on the promotion of co-curricular teachers based on winning national trophies in various sporting activities.

Recently, while hosting the winners of the national music and drama festivals competitions at State House, the president announced 5,000 slots of teachers to be promoted given the responsibility of preparing learners to different levels of competition in co-curricular activities.

KPSA said the move will be a big boost to sports and arts educators who invest their time and energy in preparing learners for national competitions.

Speaking exclusively to the Education News, KPSA National Secretary Mamai Etyang said if the proposal was adopted, teachers would be very happy for the recognition of their exemplary work.

Etyang says co-curricular tutors put in a lot of efforts in the development various talents across the country; an effort he said, has been going unrewarded.

“We offer our unwavering support to the president’s proposal. It is an idea whose time had come. Teachers do a lot in molding and nurturing talents of millions of children in the country. Promoting those greatly involved in this huge task is a move in the right direction”, remarked Etyang.

Terming schools in the country as a seedbed for talents, Etyang says resources need to be pumped into learning institutions to facilitate identification and subsequent development of gifted sports people in future.

He singled out primary schools where he said had been ignored for a long time in the past asking government to also pay attention to untapped talents at that level of learning.

He at the same time said inclusion of sports in the new competence based curriculum would underscore the need of nurturing talents in early stages giving it importance in learning system of the country.
