International Teachers Training commences in China

Delegates at a ceremony to launch the International Teachers Training Centre, a cooperation between Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) and Guangzhou Technician College (GZTC) in Guangzhou China

Guangzhou Technician College (GZTC) and the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) have jointly inaugurated an International Teachers Training Centre in Guangzhou, China.

The establishment, supported by the World Bank through the East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP), aims to enhance the delivery of Technical and Vocation Education and Training (TVET) programmes in East Africa.

During the launch event, Prof. Gaspard Banyankimbona, the Executive Secretary of IUCEA, emphasized the significance of the center in fostering professional development and knowledge exchange among TVET educators across East Africa.

The initiative is part of the collaboration between IUCEA and GZTC, contributing to the production of a globally competitive workforce while addressing the developmental needs of the East African Community (EAC).

The training center aligns with IUCEA’s broader strategy of engaging international partners to support higher education institutions and provide enhanced learning opportunities for East African students.

Previous collaborations include partnerships with Kyungdong University in South Korea and Galilee International Management Institute in Israel.

Prof. Banyankimbona stressed the importance of international partnerships in advancing higher education and research, facilitating research and knowledge exchange, and fostering cooperation between regions.

Dr. Xiaoyan Liang, the World Bank Lead Education Specialist, underscored the impact of Technical and Vocation Education and Training (TVET) in the Chinese education system, citing its role in enhancing national employment and competitiveness.

Prof. Li Minnggen, Secretary of GZTC’s Party Committee, expressed delight in partnering with IUCEA to establish the international teacher training center.

He believes that the center, aligned with the Belt and Road Initiative, will positively influence the development of TVET in East Africa and beyond.

The training center’s offerings include leadership training for senior managers of TVET colleges, curriculum development and design, and facilitation of robust industry-TVET collaborations.

This collaborative effort seeks to contribute to the advancement of TVET programs in the East African region.
