The Ministry of Interior is set to construct two dormitories in Tharaka South, Tharaka Nithi county at a cost of Ksh60 million in a bid to improve the schools’ infrastructure.

Kanyaga and Mugui Mixed Day Secondary schools have each been allocated Ksh30 million to enable commencement of the dormitories.

While touring the two institutions, Peter Karanja, a representative from the ministry and politician Paul Mugambi said that the dormitories will accommodate 253 students.

Karanja urged the contractor to fast-track the two projects and ensure he finishes them in good time in order to benefit learners.

“We have authorized the contractor to come on-site immediately and we assure residents there will be value for money in the construction of the dormitories,” Karanja said.

He appealed to residents to continue supporting the government to ensure their children get proper education.

“These dormitories will increase transition and enrolment of students here because they have better facilities and a place to sleep. Being a day school with a dormitory, many will long to study at the institution rather than walking far away distances that will tire them and inevitably affect their learning,” he said.

Karanja said they anticipate the contractor will complete the dormitories within the set timelines adding that in case of any challenges, the ministry will collaborate and effectively engage the school management and the contractor to fast-track the projects.

“In six months’ time, the two dormitories should be done and handed over to the institutions,” he said.

Mugambi lauded the ministry for the gesture which is meant to enhance the infrastructure and general improvement of the two schools.

“Mugui dormitory will accommodate at least 123 students while the Kanyaga dormitory will accommodate 130 students. The office of MP promised to allocate funds to improve infrastructure in schools. I urge the contractor to involve local suppliers and pick casual laborers from here in order to transform their lives through the income earned from the projects,” he said.
