Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVIST) is targeting to plant at least 1 million trees countrywide during rainy season to support government agenda on increasing 10 per cent forest cover in the next financial year.
Kenya, through the National Tree Growing and Restoration campaign targets to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. RVIST Principal, Sammy Chemoiwa, while speaking on the sidelines of climate change, said all strategies have been mapped out to support efforts geared to combat adverse effects of the global threat.
He said the ambitious program seeks to engage two boys and girls schools per county across all 47 counties starting this year as one way the institutions can be in tandem with the government’s blueprint.
Kenya is among parties to United Nations’ framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) that was convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm El–Sheikh to operationalize a loss and damage fund to mitigate reeling impacts of climate change.
The Principal noted that RVIST was committed to donate 30 per cent of trees and cumulatively 300,000 and sell the rest as part of the noble course.
Chemoiwa said the institution is partnering with climate smart group volunteers to adopt schools to allow easy monitoring and at the same time become responsible.
Elsewhere, Youth Enterprise Fund Director, Symon Almaida Ayabei, has initiated a tree planting campaign exercise in Kipkata, Baringo North in Baringo County to support the government agenda.
The Director told Education News that Baringo County government, the County Assembly and private institutions are fully behind the worthy course.
Baringo Liberal Minds (BLM) group led by Professor Daniel Chebutuk, recently launched the planting of 350,000 trees in Baringo with chief sponsors being the Equity Bank Kabarnet Branch Willy Bett and Lake Bogoria Spa Resort General Manager and Top 100 Women in Travel and Tourism Africa Awards Winner, Lydia Dentewo taking the lead.
