Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA) University don has asked communities to instill a reading culture in children during their formative years to bolster education standards.
Professor Joshua Bagaka who was speaking at Inani primary school in Nyamache County said when children embrace the culture it forms a firm foundation for the acquisition of quality education.
Bagaka said that his foundation called Baby Read will work with teachers, parents, and other education stakeholders to support the reading culture in rural schools.
“We started this foundation three years ago I can see it has taken root in our rural primary school.”He said.
He revealed that the program has distributed more than 5000 books to various young readers across the county.
Bagaka who is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (D/VC) of Academic, Research, and Renovation at KCA asked teachers to encourage learners to read for pleasure as they grow to enable them to develop a passion for reading.
“The main objective of this program is to place more books in the hands of children for reading on their own both at home and at school.
The headteacher of Inani Primary Mr.Emmanuel Otieno, led his school Management to appreciate the Professor for the good gesture.
He said that the program started three years ago at the school, it had improved the reading and communication skills among learners.
He revealed that the Sh.1 million donated by Prof Bagaka Foundation had been utilized well to develop and support the reading culture in the institution.
He said that the money was used to construct good storage facilities for the books and pay for the extra staff who attend the big number of pupils at the school.
