Inside unique school where students are not sent home for fees

By Leonard Angatia

A school in Nandi County has set a tradition of not sending students home for school fees but rather invites parents of affected students to find a convenient solution that works for both parties.

This strategy has borne fruit big time at Our Lady of victory Girls – Kapnyeberai with students excelling in national examinations and topping the County in KCSE.

“I don’t send students home for fees for maximum utilization of time and concentration on studies. We only invite parents and hold a round table talk,” Sr. Mary Stephens, the school Principal says matter-of-factly.

Thanking parents for timely fees payment, she has a rare approach to maximizing the use of time in the school.

Sponsored by the Eldoret Catholic Diocese, the school puts God first in everything they do, however small it might be.

Intensive revision of past papers and mentorship programmes are the hallmark of good performance of the respected institution.

The two pillars are pivotal as they expose candidates to invaluable experiences and create a familiar environment around examinations, with invited guest speakers, who are veteran examiners, offering their guidance to dispel any anxieties and fear.

Typical and topical examination questions are given to test their understanding, which are thoroughly revised to deepen their content grasp. Alongside these, best performers are rewarded handsomely as the weak ones are encouraged through extra remedial interventions after every exam.

There are also weekend challenges in Sciences and Mathematics to train them to handle tough examinations, even as they are motivated to change their attitude towards these subjects.

“I have a dedicated enthusiastic team of teachers who go beyond their normal working hours to ensure there is balance between academics and co-curricular activities,” adds the Principal.

No wonder the 8-stream extra county school with 1,450 students is among the best in the region.

Previous exams have proved so, and this year’s 323 candidates have set a new target of 8.0 in the 2022 KCSE.
