Increase teachers’ salary to cushion against increased taxes, KUPPET tells Govt

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called on the government to re-open negotiations of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to include a monetary component.

While addressing the 46th Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Conference in Mombasa on Wednesday, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori noted that since the Finance Bill 2023 has been passed and assented into law by the President, the only wise thing the government can do is to increase teachers’ salary to cushion them from the increased taxes contained therein.

He criticized Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu for lying to the public during his Parliament address that the Ministry would release Ksh28 billion for capitation for secondary schools but ended up releasing Ksh24 billion, which has not reached some schools so far.

The union has also called for the implementation of a robust data collection and management and that the Ministry of Education should devolve the functions of data management to regions; and further called for employment of more teachers in schools to effectively manage the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
