Kenya National Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Vihiga branch Executive Secretary Sabala Inyeni has urged the government to double travelling reimbursement for teachers and also further improve the conditions in the marking centres.
Speaking to Education News recently, Inyeni stated teachers were forced to dig deeper into their pockets to cater for their travelling expenses to Nairobi due to freezing of public transport to and from the zoned area.
Noting that the county has lost about four teachers for the last one month due to Covid-19, he urged Knec to improve the working conditions of the examiners in the marking centres so as to by fully observe the health protocols.
“We expect the marking centres to, provide hand sanitizers and ensure social distancing because we are receiving complaints that the marking centres are congested, that means some of our colleagues who are senior and who are leaders in this exercise may also jeopardize their lives,” added Inyeni.
On the government’s 100 per cent transition, Inyeni raised concern as to why the government is insisting on 100 per cent transition to Form One and at the same time implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“The government has invested a lot in TVET, you realize that in the last three financial years there has been a very good substantive allocation for those institutions, why then are we insisting that everybody should go to Form One? including pupils who have scored 100 marks, 150?” posed Inyeni.
