West Pokot County Commissioner David Saruni has called on parents to register their families under the Social Health Authority (SHA), saying that weight of illness to children’s education is huge.
Speaking in West Pokot, he urged them to sell a single goat to secure their family’s well-being and children’s future through comprehensive health coverage.

“Illness arrives without warning. A child may leave home in the morning full of energy and return by evening with a high fever. A parent may be injured while herding or fall ill suddenly. A mother may face complications from a preventable disease.” He said
He added that in these moments, the first battle is rarely medical—it is financial. Hospital deposits, tests, medicines, transport, and daily care for the patient all demand immediate payment.
“When families lack insurance, even a child in school may be forced to stay home while the household scrambles to raise money. Lessons are missed. Attendance becomes irregular. In some cases, education is discontinued temporarily because families cannot afford both treatment and school fees simultaneously.” He said
