Youth from Igembe North have called for greater inclusion in the Meru County government, urging leaders to allocate them positions in the county leadership.
The call comes days after Meru Chief of Staff, Dr Julius Mbijiwe, was shortlisted for appointment as Kenya’s ambassador to Vatican City.
The youth congratulated Dr Mbijiwe on the nomination, praising his performance in previous roles and expressing confidence that he will successfully navigate the parliamentary vetting process.
Led by local youth representatives, the group said the potential exit of Dr Mbijiwe from county affairs should open up opportunities for qualified youths from Igembe North to serve in government.
Moses Njuki lauded Dr Mbijiwe’s nomination, describing it as a proud moment for the region.
However, he emphasised the need for Igembe North youths to be considered for leadership roles, noting that young people form the majority of voters and deserve representation.
Kirimi James echoed the sentiments, expressing confidence that Dr Mbijiwe will represent the country well in his new diplomatic role.
At the same time, Alex Munene pointed out disparities in leadership distribution within the county, noting that Igembe Central holds more positions compared to Igembe North.
“Igembe North region has many educated and capable youths who can effectively serve in government. We are backing one of our own, Amaton Mugambi, for a leadership slot,” said Munene.
Amos Mugendi, chairman of Ntunene boda boda operators, criticised the county leadership for sidelining Igembe North residents.
He said that despite Dr Mbijiwe’s track record of delivering during his tenure, the region continues to lag behind in benefiting from county opportunities.
“We have not been heard. We should not only be remembered during elections. Qualified youths from Igembe North must be considered,” he said.
Lena Ntinyari also supported the nomination of Amaton Mugambi, saying his appointment would help amplify the voice of youths from the region in county leadership.

The youths further faulted the administration of Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia, accusing it of failing to involve Igembe North residents in top county positions.
They now want deliberate efforts made to ensure equitable representation across all regions of Meru County, warning that continued exclusion could deepen dissatisfaction among young voters.
