The Igembe Focus Community-Based Organization (CBO) has embarked on an ambitious programme to provide sanitary towels to 1,200 girls every month.
Group Patron, Romano Mwito, said that the primary objective of the initiative is to ensure that girls attend school undisrupted during their menstrual cycle.
Mwito noted that education is the cornerstone of societal progress and called on like-minded well-wishers, individuals and organizations to financially support the initiative to ensure its sustainability.
He said that the initiative targets six schools, with a focus on prioritizing girls hailing from underprivileged backgrounds.
Group Chairman, Morris Kobia, said that they aspire to reach as many girls as possible, with an emphasis on day schools in arid and semi-arid regions.
He disclosed that the group plans to conduct distribution exercises monthly or per academic term, contingent on available resources.
Florence Kanorio, a dedicated member of the organization, emphasized the need for proper education about menstrual hygiene.
She noted that many girls resort to feigning illness to avoid school during their menstrual cycle due to the associated shame.
Kanorio stressed that educating children about the naturalness of menstruation is a shared responsibility within the community.
In a heartwarming conclusion, the CBO surpassed its initial target by reaching 1,480 girls, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to empowering young girls in the region.
