ICT integration in Machakos school improves KCPE mean score

Excited Kisukioni Primary School students in the computer lab.

The equipping of a computer laboratory at Kisukioni Primary and Junior School in Matungulu sub-county, Machakos county has greatly contributed to the improvement of its 2023 KCPE mean score by 17 points, Headteacher Annie Nguna has said.

Speaking during an interview with Education News, Nguna observed that the laboratory has also increased enrolment as parents seek to ensure their children are computer literate.

She said that the ICT lab has enriched learners’ education and has positively changed their attitudes towards learning.

Nguna noted that students are excited and lively during lessons in the lab, highlighting the positive impact of integrating technology into education.

“We got the computers early last year around February and since then things have changed. The students are attentive and motivated in addition to increasing access to diverse learning resources which facilitate personalized learning experiences,“ she said.

At the same time, it has assisted them in realizing their goal of integrating ICT into learning in accordance with the Competency-Based Curriculum being rolled out in the country’s education system.

“ICT makes the learning interactive, allowing students to explore content and receive immediate feedback,” she said.

“The lower grades are taught basic skills but the upper classes have the Computer Science subject which purely requires the use of computers,” said Winnie, a teacher at the school.

Further, Nguna noted that other area schools without an ICT lab come to use theirs at a fee.
