Kisii Children’s Home has a record number of infants below two years, raising fears that some of them may be victims of child trafficking.

Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary (CS) Florence Bore expressed shock at the huge numbers during a visit to the home.

Observing that most of the children are from Bomet, Nyamira, Homabay, Migori and Kisii counties, she urged the public to be vigilant and report suspicious cases of children joining these sanctuaries.

She noted that the goal is for these children to be under the home care for a short period before being reconciled with the community, she repeated her earlier stand to close private facilities in the next couple of years.

“In the case of privately-owned children’s homes, they were given ten years to close down, and two years have already gone by,” she said.

Explaining that the children enrolled in the homes have had extremely difficult backgrounds, she urged potential adoptive parents to follow the proper procedures and demonstrate their capability to provide good care.

The government intends to establish its own rescue centres and strengthen oversight of the remaining private homes to stamp out trafficking.
