Huge fans overwhelm pitch as Kakamega North School football final match postponed

Massive crowd turns up for Kakamega North final Between Lugusi and Shamberere

History was made yesterday as the Kakamega North Sub-County boys’ football final between Lugusi Boys and Shamberere Secondary recorded the highest attendance of any sub-county school match in the 2025 KSSSA games across the country.

Held at Malava Boys High School grounds, the eagerly awaited clash ended in a goalless draw during regular time. However, the match couldn’t proceed to extra time or penalties after thousands of passionate fans flooded the pitch, making it impossible for the referees to continue. The game was subsequently postponed to Monday, June 9.

The match atmosphere resembled a national-level final, with chants, vuvuzelas, and excitement echoing throughout the venue. While the boys’ final remains unfinished, the day also witnessed a major upset in the girls’ category.

Former Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia captain Harun Shakava helped manage fans during the Kakamega North Sub-County final between Shamabere and Lugusi Secondary Schools yesterday.

Defending county champions Kimang’eti Girls were stunned by a determined St. Anthony Kakoyi Girls side, who knocked them out in a thrilling contest.

With the boys’ final set to resume today under tighter security, Kakamega North has solidified its reputation as a powerhouse of grassroots football and unmatched fan enthusiasm.
