The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has released the distribution of the 20, 000 internship positions for teachers in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and Primary Schools for July 2023 by county.
The commission targets unemployed registered teachers to be assigned to learning institutions where their teaching experience will be enhanced through mentorship, coaching, and exposure to practical teaching experience.
TSC had announced earlier that the internship opportunities were available in 18, 000 JSS and 2, 000 primary schools to help with the implementation of a Competency-Based Curriculum.
The interns have been distributed across the 47 counties with Kitui County being allocated the highest number of JSS intern teachers.
Other slots were distributed as follows:
Central: Kiambu was allocated 533 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Murang’a 635 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Nyandarua 324 JSS interns and 42, Kirinyaga 271 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers while Nyeri County was allocated a total of 415 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers.
Coast Region: Mombasa County was allocated 128 JSS interns and 42 primary school interns, 188 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers in Taita Taveta, 156 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers in Tana River, 398 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers in Kwale, 512 JSS interns and 44 primary teachers in Kilifi and 89 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers in Lamu.
Eastern Region: Embu was allocated 354 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Isiolo 78 JSS teachers and 42 primary teachers, Kitui 758 JSS teachers and 44 primary teachers, Machakos 655 JSS teachers and 42 primary interns, Makueni 552 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Marsabit 150 JSS interns and 42 primary interns, Meru 468 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers while Tharaka Nithi was allocated 314 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers.
Nairobi County has been allocated a total of 424 JSS interns and 42 primary school interns.
North Eastern: Mandera County has the highest allocation of 229 JSS interns and 45 primary interns; Wajir has 205 JSS interns and 45 primary interns, Garissa has been allocated 159 JSS interns and 45 primary school teacher interns.
Nyanza: Kisii has been awarded 691 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Nyamira has 403 JSS teachers and 42 primary interns, Migori will secure 389 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Siaya has an allocation of 420 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Kisumu has will be provided with 249 JSS interns and 45 primary teachers and Homa Bay County 386 JSS interns and 44 primary teachers.
Rift Valley: Baringo has 574 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Bomet has 553 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Elgeyo Marakwet has 375 JSS interns and42 primary teachers, Kajiado has 381 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Kericho has 485 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Laikipia has 244 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Nakuru has 698 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers.
Nandi County has 580 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Narok has 618 JSS teachers and 42 primary interns, Samburu has 133 JSS interns and 44 primary teachers, Trans Nzoia has 325 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Turkana has 260 JSS interns and 44 primary teachers, Uasin Gishu has 362 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers while West Pokot has 431 JSS interns and 44 primary teachers.
Western: Kakamega has been distributed 479 JSS interns and 44 primary teachers, Bungoma will have 454 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers, Busia will receive 261 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers while Vihiga will be given 254 JSS interns and 42 primary teachers.
Those placed in primary schools will be eligible for a monthly stipend of Ksh15, 000 while those in Junior Secondary Schools will get Ksh20, 000. The internship period will be for 12 months for the financial year 2023/2024.
Further, successful candidates for JSS shall be required to teach various learning areas under Junior Secondary Curriculum.
The teacher interns will be awarded a certificate from The Teachers Service Commission after successful completion of the internship program.
Applications were closed on July 18.
