How tragic death of classmate 26 years ago inspired man to become a surgeon

The former student of Alliance High School in Nairobi Keith Dindi was inspired to be a surgeon since 1997 when the life of his best friend Masaki took a tragic turn due to a congenital heart condition that halted his journey before he could reach his aspirations.

For Dindi, the pain of watching Masaki struggle and the heart-wrenching separation when his friend left for heart treatment but never returned to school left an indelible mark on his soul.

Additionally, he pledged to make a difference for children battling similar heart conditions, despite knowing Masaki for a relatively short period.

Consequently, Dindi pursued a career in heart surgery at Moi University.

According to him, each time he operates on a heart, he carries with him the memory of his dear friend, Masaki.

“When I joined Alliance High School as a 13-year-old boy, the first friend I made was Masaki. That’s why his premature departure left me shattered, but it also ignited the flame within me to pursue a career in heart surgery,” Dindi stated.

Today, the surgeon has been joined by fellow alumni and generous well-wishers to establish a heart foundation in memory of Alex Masaki.

Reportedly, on October 20, 2023, they will undertake a poignant visit to the Masaki family in their Kitui home, ensuring that the opportunity denied to Masaki is granted to other children facing similar heart-related challenges.
