How teachers can deal with violent learners

Hillary Muhalya.

Just as we have well behaved learners, school is also home to insubordinate learners, some of whom pose a lot of havoc to their own parents or guardians.

There are occasions when a teacher may get slapped, stoned or even injured severely by a learner.

Before a particular teacher reacts against such misbehaviour, careful consideration of any response has to be encouraged to avoid such a situation blowing out of proportion.

Certain reactions have been witnessed in which the school’s bouncers swing into action and inflict untold injury upon the learner.

When a teacher is slapped or injured by a learner, it’s a serious situation that requires careful handling, which may at times go beyond the school’s edge of a precipice.

The teacher should report the incident to the school administration or relevant authorities, depending on the matter.

It’s very prudent to determine the severity of the incident and whether any disciplinary action is necessary and its magnitude.

Teachers in proximity have to provide emotional support and ensure the teacher receives any necessary medical attention.

The administration has to identify any underlying issues that may have contributed to the incident, such as behavioral problems or learning difficulties, and work to address them.

It’s advisable for the available teachers to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, such as conflict resolution training for teachers and students.

If the matter has adverse legal implications, the response will depend on the jurisdiction and specific circumstances. Possible legal consequences for the learner could include disciplinary action, such as suspension or expulsion, or even criminal charges in severe cases recorded at the police station.

It’s essential for schools to have clear policies and procedures in place for managing incidents of violence or aggression towards teachers. This can help ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for everyone.

After being slapped or injured by a learner, a teacher should prioritize their well-being and take steps to address the situation. Here’s a suggested approach:

Even in very severe conditions, teachers have to remain composed and avoid reacting impulsively.

Another most immediate step is to inform school administrators, colleagues, or a trusted friend about the incident.

Document the incident in the schools occurance book and report it to the school administration or relevant authorities.

The teacher has to ensure that there’s immediate safety and seek medical attention if necessary, adhere to school protocols for handling incidents of violence or aggression.

Members are advised to seek professional help to cope with emotional impact.

By taking these steps, teachers can effectively manage the situation and work towards a resolution.
