How mental health programmes can be fitted into school routines

The writer is a communications student at Rongo University.

Mental health support for students is an increasingly pressing issue in schools today. With the rising academic pressures, social challenges and the pervasive influence of technology and social media, students face unprecedented mental health challenges.

Addressing this issue comprehensively is crucial for fostering a supportive and conducive learning environment.

Implementing comprehensive mental health programmes in schools is a foundational step. These programmes should include readily accessible counselling services, mental health education and workshops focussed on stress management and resilience.

By providing these resources, schools can help students develop coping strategies and emotional regulation skills, which are essential for their overall well-being.

Training staff and teachers to recognize the signs of mental health issues is equally important. Educators are often the first point of contact for students experiencing difficulties, making it imperative for them to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify and support those in need.

Professional development programmes focussed on mental health awareness can empower teachers to create a supportive classroom environment and effectively refer students to appropriate resources.

Creating a supportive school environment that promotes open discussions about mental health is another critical component. Schools should actively work to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues by encouraging dialogue and providing platforms for students to share their experiences. This can be achieved through initiatives like mental health awareness campaigns, peer support groups, and inclusive policies that prioritize student well-being.

Collaboration with parents and the community further strengthens the support network available to students. Engaging families through regular communication, workshops and community partnerships ensures a holistic approach to mental health. Schools can facilitate connections between students and external mental health resources, providing a broader safety net for those in need.

Proactively addressing mental health in schools is not just about managing crises but fostering an environment where students can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. By implementing comprehensive programmes, training educators, creating a supportive culture and collaborating with families and the community, schools can significantly enhance the mental health and well-being of their students.
