Hope in the dark as Kitui unveils Sh39 million school for the visually impaired

The school is fully equipped with classrooms, dormitories, computer rooms, a library, as well as beds, mattresses, and blankets.

The Ministry of Education recognises the rights of all children with disability in Kenya, the Special Needs Education Director, Dr. Fredrick Haga, said.

“It is our responsibility, all of us, to ensure that all the children with disability in the country are in school,” he further said.

Haga said the education ministry will continue to support students with disabilities in the country to ensure they acquire quality education.

The director was speaking recently when he officially opened the Kitui Comprehensive School for the Visually Impaired, where he was the chief guest at the function.

The school is within the compound of the Kitui Central Primary School in Kitui Town. The Kitui Comprehensive School for the Visually Impaired was constructed for 39 million shillings through funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and Deutsches Blinden-Hilfswerk, via Salus Oculi Kenya. It is fully equipped, including classrooms, dormitories, computer rooms, a library, beds, mattresses, and blankets.

“Disability is not inability,” Haga said as he asked the disabled students to share their dreams. “If you don’t have the dreams this time you are in school, the world will arrange you in a very bad situation,” the educationist told the disabled students in Kenya.

“This is a project that changes lives,” Haga said regarding the institution, adding that we all have a role to play when we are talking about supporting the students with special needs. He highly thanked the Kitui County government for its outstanding support of special needs students in the county.

The area Kitui Central Constituency Member of Parliament, Dr. Benson Makali Mulu, was present, where he also addressed the event.

The MP highly thanked the donors for the support. “We do the appreciation for the support. The locals are aware of what you are doing. I want to encourage you to do a perfect job,” he said. And he added that Kenya and Germany have very good relations.

I, as the MP, have two special schools in my constituency- the Kitui School for the Deaf and the Kitui School for the Mentally Handicapped. My doors are open as a political leader in this region. God bless you. God bless you, Mulu said.

On his part, Ahmed Khalid, the Kitui County Education Director, said, “I want to appreciate all our (the education ministry) partners, including the UNICEF.” And I also like to appreciate our MP, the children, the teachers and the parents,” the educationist added.

This special needs school, constructed by the German government for us, has dormitories for 40 boys and 40 girls. The institution has a library, classrooms, dormitories, and computer rooms, among many others, Khalid said, as he highly appreciated the German government for its support.

Regarding the transition, the director stated that the transition in Kitui County is 100 per cent. The occasion was also addressed by the Kitui County Education Board Chairman, Kilonzo Musilu, among others.

Meanwhile, this year’s Kitui Secondary Schools Music Festival took place at the Tungutu Girls Secondary School within the county’s Kitui Central District.

The three-day event, from Thursday, June 19, to Saturday, June 21, 2025, was organised by the Kenya Education Ministry, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA), the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), and Equity Bank.
