Homa Bay leaders hold community forum to expedite fight against GBV

Leaders in Homa Bay held a consultative forum in Rangwe constituency to address the issue of rampant Gender Based Violence (GBV), Femicide and teenage pregnancy.

The function was hosted by Rangwe MP Dr. Lilian Gogo on June 29 and attended Governor Gladys Wanga, Dr. Eve Obara (Kabondo Kasipul) and Fatuma Mohammed (Migori Woman Rep.), saw hundreds of learners in Rangwe Constituency, received NG-CDF bursaries

In addition to handing out bursary cheques, the leaders led an open dialogue with residents on how the constituency and Homa Bay County at large, can protect women and girls from violence and early motherhood.

“Gender-Based Violence, femicide and teenage pregnancies remain a blot in our transformative agenda as a county, and as leadership, we are taking bold steps in addressing these matters,” Dr. Gogo said, underscoring the central theme of the gathering.

During the session, community members highlighted gaps in reporting GBV cases, access to safe spaces for survivors and the need for sustained school retention programmes for girls.

The MPs outlined plans to strengthen local rescue centres, support reproductive-health education and tighten links between chiefs, police and hospitals when abuse is reported.

The bursary component saw secondary and university level students from vulnerable households receive fee support for the new academic term.

Organizers said pairing financial aid with a social justice forum sends a clear message that education and safety must advance together if Rangwe’s youth are to fulfill their potential.

Stakeholders resolved to hold follow up Barraza’s in each ward to track progress on both bursary impact and GBV prevention commitments before the end of the year.
