As they are popularly known in Kiswahili, “Mzinga wa nyuki” is an important economic activity for farmers in West Pokot County.
The majority of farmers who practice honey harvesting are found in dry and wet environments, as the conditions are favourable for the manufacture of honey by bees.
However, behind the successful honey harvesting, the quality and durability of the popular “Mzinga wa Nyuki” beehive material require a skilled person to craft them, making them appealing to customers.
And that one person is Mzee Wilson Pongole, whose main task is to look for trees with good trunks that can accommodate enough bees for honey production.

Pongole started making beehives about three years ago, and now, with enough experience, he can produce about two to three beehives in a day.
“The average beehive costs KShs2,500 while the bigger one costs KShs 5,000. On a good day, I can sell pto four or five beehives in a day, and that amount sustains my family and also covers my children’s school fees,” said Pongole.
I’m proud to have acquired that skill from other experienced artisans. However, I’ve perfected the skill to attract more clients,” said Pongole.
He further stated that he plans to join a savings and loan cooperative society so that he can secure a loan to expand his business.
He also said that his customers come from within the county, Uasin Gishu County and the neighbouring countries.
