One year from now, secondary school teachers in Trans Nzoia will meet to elect new branch officials or retain the outgoing ones.
Depending on their wishes, they will re-elect the outgoing officials to continue representing the teachers after the recent amendment of the KUPPET clause that delimited the retirement age or quit the trade movement after hitting the mandatory age of 60.
Over 3,000 union members from both primary and secondary schools will converge on February 26, 2026, during their AGM at an avenue yet to be disclosed.
There are high stakes involved. Teachers across the board move from one corner to another in an effort to draw support as the election date nears.
A popular joint in Kitale town is always buzzing with activity as both male and female aspirants mingle for strategy and to share their manifestos, which they hope will guarantee them votes in next year’s polls.

On the agenda is the executive position held by the pioneer Furaha Lusweti, who has yet to declare whether he will defend the seat after retirement age following the window of extending the bowing out of the trade movement because of age limits.
The chairman’s job, held by Eliud Wafula, who faces a similar challenge as Lusweti, is also up for grabs. Both are contemplating quitting, but members have urged them to stay. The duo could be saved by the Amended Clauses, which delegitimised the 60-year retirement age.
The incumbent Assistant Treasurer, Jane Rose Mutama, could be an automatic non-contestant, having been appointed as the CEC member for Education by Governor George Natembeya.

Unless she retains her teaching status, she will be considered out of the KUPPET race as she struggles to fend off impeachment motions from the County Assembly of Trans Nzoia.
However, the teachers are not bogged down by the amended clauses and have vowed to take on any aspirants, former and new entrants.
For the Executive office, the immediate former treasurers Martin Wafula from Tuwan Girls and Daniel Kutia from Osongai Boys are battling to unseat Lusweti.
