Help children develop reading culture, Nominated Senator says

Parents and teachers have been asked to encourage children to develop a reading culture for easier interpretation of questions in examinations.

Kisii County Nominated Senator Essy Okenyuri said that the best way to better education standards in learning institutions is to equip them with enough learning materials that will catapult learners towards better examination performance.

He was speaking at Mosensema Secondary School in Bomachoge Borabu Constituency where she donated text books worth Ksh300,000 to the school.

She said her Nyaituga Foundation is determined to work with all public and private institutions and individuals towards topping up government’s effort to raise education standards in this country.

She regretted that most students complete their secondary education and university without proper career guides and end up regretting later in life after failing to secure jobs.

“Let our schools be equiped with a variety of books and with career experts to enable our children decide early on career choices and set to work to achieve their goals instead of groping in the darkness,” she said.

She thanked Miran Publishers for donating the books to support her foundation and asked other well wishers to join her.

She reiterated that the main motivating force behind the programme is to normalize the culture of reading, which she said was dying among learners because of modern technology that has absorbed their minds.

Bomachoge Borabu Member of Parliament, who accompanied the Senator, thanked her and promised to devote both his physical and financial support for education growth in the region.

Kisii Branch KUPPET Executive Secretary Joseph Abincha lauded the programme, asking the government to employ more teachers for easy close monitoring and supervision of pupils.
