Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has offered 80 percent waiver to all loan defaulters, the relief which applies to individuals who settle their outstanding arrears in full.
In a public notice issued on, August 5, 2025, HELB confirmed that the waiver is aimed at encouraging defaulters to clear their loans and reduce the growing backlog of unpaid debts. Beneficiaries are required to pay their entire arrears at once to qualify for the waiver.
To access the service, individuals can dial *642#, use the HELB mobile application, or log in to the HELB online portal. The board has also introduced a QR code in the notice to simplify the process for employers who wish to facilitate repayments through a check-off system for their employees.
HELB emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that loan repayments are critical for the sustainability of its student financing programmes.
