The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced changes to how loans are allocated for continuing university and college students. The update applies to those who applied for subsequent loans and were issued on August 8.
HELB clarified that the scholarship component remains in place but will now be handled separately from the upkeep funds.
“HELB has changed the structure of allocations, the scholarship has not been removed, it has just been separated from your upkeep and will be processed differently,” HELB stated.
The board explained that at the moment, only the upkeep funds are visible in students’ accounts. These funds are allocated according to a new band structure, representing the total amount for the academic year, and will be paid in two equal installments, one for each semester.
Students in Band 1 will receive KSh60, 000 per year, disbursed as Ksh30, 000 per semester. Band 2 students will get Ksh55, 000 annually, with KSh27, 500 per semester. Band 3 students will be allocated Ksh50, 000, which will be split into Ksh25, 000 per semester. Those in Band 4 will get KSh45, 000 for the year, or KSh22, 500 per semester, while Band 5 students will receive KSh40, 000 annually, amounting to KSh20, 000 per semester.

HELB assured beneficiaries that the scholarship funds will be processed and released separately, and no funds have been lost.
Students whose portals have not yet reflected any amount are advised to remain calm, as the updating process is ongoing.
“If a student’s portal is still not showing any amount, HELB advises them to stay calm as the system is still being updated. Those who applied using the HELB App or by dialling *642# are still safe and will receive their allocations,” the board added.
“Let’s remain patient as allocations are being updated in phases. Your turn is coming,” the statement added.
HELB has pledged to share further updates in the coming days and urged students to exercise patience as the process continues.
