Heart of CBC founded in secondary school, says KICD

Better things are yet to come for children when they join Junior Secondary School, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has said.

Representing the organization at the 45th Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) at Sheikh Zayed Children’s Welfare Centre in Mombasa, KICD’s chief executive Charles Ong’ondo the timing of junior secondary was perfect – at the point where children’s curiosity was at its peak.

“Why should they (learners) be kept in primary school for eight years yet the content is in secondary school?” he wondered, maintaining that the CBC curriculum mainly focused on the secondary school dispensation, with primary school teachers only laying the important foundation needed at the higher level.

He dispelled fears that the system was expensive, noting that innovation will allow the use of available resources without necessarily incurring extra costs.

Projecting the curriculum to remove the heavy deployment of resources to guard national examinations, Ong’ondo said the face of teaching will change in the next couple of years, with some disciplines being re-engineered or eliminated altogether.

The pioneer junior secondary class is expected as early as late 2022.
