Health workers in Kisii begin HIV/AIDS campaign ahead of World AIDS Day

David Nyakambi, Kisii County Public Health Campaigns Coordinator.

Kisii County health workers have started aggressive campaigns towards the control of HIV/AIDS ahead of the World Aids Day to be celebrated on Friday.

Speaking on Monday in Kisii town, the county Public Health Campaigns Coordinator David Nyakambi said his group will take the campaign to the grassroots to sensitize the populace.

“Most of these people think that HIV/AIDS victims live in towns,” he said, revealing plans to have the community lead the campaigns in all the 11 sub-counties in the region.

He appealed to residents, including students, to turn up for free and voluntary testing.

“Many victims of the disease are young people between 12 and 30 years and I appeal to our children to volunteer for testing to know their status,” he said, encouraging the youth to turn up as they are assured of confidentiality from his team of trained and qualified counsellors.

He appealed to all chiefs and their assistants to mobilize their jurisdictions to make the campaign a success.

According to Kenya Fast Track to End HIV/AIDS, 5,012 youth between the ages of 14 and 24 in Kisii County live with the disease and do not know their status.

Nyakambi promised to mobilize his team to move to all schools and churches next year as schools reopen to ask teachers and students to be in the forefront in the fight.
